Little scientists’ big discoveries: Groundwater Made Fun

On October 29, 2025, the ELTE József and Erzsébet Tóth Hydrogeology Chair joined the fall Little Scientist Camp programs, which ELTE announced for the first time this year as a continuation of the highly successful summer camp. The goal: to introduce elementary school children to the natural sciences in a playful and experiential way during the fall break at the ELTE TTK campus in Lágymányos.
In the five-station program entitled “Secret Paths of the Earth’s Depths,” participants:
  1. tried out a spectacular experiment that vividly demonstrated the spread and long-term effects of underground pollutants;
  2. learned about the underground phase of the water cycle and the characteristics of underground waters; explored the underground path of waters with different dissolved substance contents through their own measurements;
  3. watched the Chair’s educational short films
    1. – videos presenting Budapest’s thermal waters and their potential uses: short film 1, short film 2;
    2. – in another room, videos presenting the concept of NaBa-MAR, i.e., nature-based targeted groundwater recharge: short film 3, short film 4.
    3. The films were followed by a joint brainstorming session and discussion, after which the children tested their newly acquired knowledge with a quiz;
  4. they presented their favorite water experiences or experiences of the day in a creative drawing task; the most imaginative creations were rewarded.
During the program, the children experienced the joy of discovery as real researchers, while learning in a playful way about the dynamics and protection of groundwater and the importance of preserving nature.
