Climate Risks and ESG in Practice: ESRS E1 from an Expert Perspective

On 16 December 2025, the 2025 credit-point continuing professional education programme of the Money and Capital Markets Section was held at the Villányi Road Conference Centre, where Szilvia Simon  delivered a presentation.

Her talk, entitled “ESRS (European Sustainability Reporting Standards) E1 Climate Change – from the Perspective of a Hungarian Natural Science Expert,” focused on how measurable trends in climate change manifest in the water cycle, with particular attention to the intensification of hydrological extremes, changes in surface water resources, declining shallow groundwater levels, and related biodiversity impacts.

Following an overview of the physical geography and hydrogeological context, the presentation took a practical approach to how corporate ESG activities—especially within the environmental pillar—can contribute to mitigating climate-related risks. Key topics included sustainable water use and water management; surface and subsurface water retention solutions (natural water retention measures and nature-based solutions); and targeted managed aquifer recharge (MAR) as a tool for adaptation and risk reduction.

The presentation was prepared with the support of project RRF-2.3.1-21-2022-00014, entitled “Multidisciplinary National Laboratory for Climate Change.”
