József and Erzsébet Tóth Endowed Hydrogeology Chair was initiated by József Tóth and founded by the Eötvös Loránd University on 1 September 2016. Organizationally it is a scientific group of hydrogeologists (researchers, PhD and MSc students) and this group is part of the Department of Physical and Applied Geology, Faculty of Science, Eötvös Loránd University, Budapest, Hungary. The main aim of this Chair is to improve the state and position of the Hungarian hydrogeology, to assist the research and education of hydrogeology in Hungary and to foster the national and international relations. The key point of the education and research is the so-called modern hydrogeology which integrates the Tóthian basin hydraulics, groundwater flow systems and their related surface and subsurface manifestations and their practical application.

The collaborators of the Chair deal with theoretical questions such as numerical simulation of processes in basin scale, hypogenic karstification and related microbiological processes: n scientific and social aspects, exploration of groundwater resources, protection of groundwater during ecological, agricultural, forestrical and landscaping related issues. This concept provides a new approach in geotechnical, geothermal, mineral and hydrocarbon resources exploration research. The researchers of the Chair integrate the new scientific results to solve practical questions and deal with social aspects.

Furthermore, popularization of the principles of modern hydrogeology in every segment of the society is also desired.

The Chair is related to the International Association of Hydrogeologists (IAH) and its Regional Groundwater Flow Commission (RGFC).
